just how many times
do I have to tell you
the difference between
empty space

and

negative space?

negative space- look closely- feel- is filled with promises.
while empty space, you see, just exists-no purpose, no life, no point.

you are my negative space.
with you, anything is possible.

  1. lol…spoken like a true designer!
despite its name, negative space has purely positive conotations!

    *hah!how profound is that!*
    😛

  2. anon- so sorry you dont get it- cant help you there. and trust me- not understanding so makes you part of the majority in this case

  3. from previous trends and comments i’ve noticed u cant handle criticism. writing and making it understood to ppl close to u and not to those not-close-to-u is a shortcommin as a writer.

  4. Anon: Let me try to explain

I think ‘negative space’ is a concept from sketching, related to the composition of your frame (I’m not related to the Arts field so please don’t sue me).

Negative space encompasses everything in the frame outside the boundaries of what you are sketching or painting or photographing (your subject). So the negative space can theoratically contain ‘nothing’ or empty space.

In composition, negative space compliments the ‘positive space’ (your subject) in such a way that the viewer feels that there is nothing distracting or missing from the composition (composition is complete).

I hope this post makes more sense to you now.

  5. thanks faraz- 🙂

for people who didnt get it and dont know how to initiate conversation or ask politely (aka anon): in design speak when someone – a layman client lets say-sees a lot of unused space in a composition they tend to think its space being wasted hence they call it empty spac ewhereas like faraz pointed out- that “empty space” is actually usually balancing the compistion and adding to it by being the area around the positive-hence its actually not “empty” but negative- its a concept in art- or life-

point being that this was my interpretation of a blogword and i don’t owe it to anyone to ruin my own understanding of something by needing to break it down into simple stupid words to explain to them something that i dont think they are interested in getting in the first place-

  6. and anon try to make a comment that is worth responding to- thats conducive to a conversation in both parties are learning or at thevery least having fun- try asking a question instead of making random judgemental declarations that make you look daft-

  7. aaaaaaaaaahhh! im soooo sick of anons!!! ive put a comment block on mine… so i publish, only whats worth my time! 😛

altho in this case, being a social law student i, too, was lost coz law-guage wise, wat u described negative space would be positive space. but ah! i see the light now!

  8. when life is predictable and typical…anon’s throw us a curve ball.

You need anon’s to make life challenging aka interesting.

Stop being a sour puss shezalldat!

  9. Negative space makes me think of words like “by default” or “apolitical” which means that in your abstinence you support whatever’s good or bad may be happening. But I think sometimes choosing not to be a part of a defined space is making a stand for a third space; your space; which refuses to be coerced into either of the defined ones.

Relax. Someone try to be a bigger person here. Kudos to Faraz-the only sensible one. Anon-although I agree with you on some points, the blog world also has an etiquette. One of which is not to forget that a blog is a queer mix of personal and public space and not a class paper. It does not have to be defined/explained anymore than the author feels is necessary.
